Tennis Europe Success for Joel in Holland
Joel Pierleoni has finished runner-up in the doubles event at an U14 Tennis Europe in Holland. Joel teamed up with fellow Brit Sam Bossem.
Joel travelled out to Amsterdam to compete in his second Tennis Europe event of the season and in the singles was drawn against the 2nd seed from France, Ivan Trevisol. The match was evenly poised in the first set at 5-5 with Joel earning a break point. However, Trevisol was able to save the break opportunity and then used this momentum to break to win the set, 7-5. The Frenchman continued to ride this wave throughout the second to take it 6-1 and claim victory. ” In the first set I played really well ripping the ball and I felt I was dominating the points. At 5-5 break point I lost my focus and that was enough for my opponent to get on top. In the second I wasn’t having as much joy off the ground as my shots started to lose their sting. I thought I played well to a point but need more of these experiences to go forward.” said Joel. Trevisol went on to win the singles event this week without losing a set.
Joel and Sam were given a bye in the first round of doubles, so started in the round of 16. They started the tournament with a straight sets win over a New Zealand pair before Joel was able to claim a little revenge over his singles opponent Trevisol and his France partner Axel Garcian. In the semi-final Joel and Sam came up against an Israeli pair. With Joel serving very strongly and Sam returning well, the Brits were far too strong for their opponents and made their way to the final to face the Germans!
The pair from Germany looked like they had been playing together for some time as they had a good understanding and communication between them. They drew first blood to break and take the opening set 6-3. The second set was far tighter and went to 5-5. Again the Germans showed their full experience at this level to claim a break and take the set 7-5 and with it the title.
Next up for Joel will be 2 Tennis Europe events in Ireland. Good luck for a successful few weeks.
