Team Tennis Returns with a Bang!

Six Berkhamsted teams were back in action this past weekend with our; U12, U14 & U16 boys, U18 girls and both the men’s & women’s teams. Our women’s team kicked off the weekend of team matches on Saturday afternoon with a trip to Letchworth. The women took a strong team comprising of Maddie Brooks, Larissa Gungah, Natalia Ilkow and Nicola Simper and they showed this strength by winning the tie 12-0 (6 rubbers each worth 2 points). The women now top the league in Herts division 1 after 3 rounds of matches and are closing in on a regional playoff spot. The next 2 ties will be played against St Albans and Radlett respectively.

On Sunday our other 5 teams were in action around Herts. Rod Minozzo and his U16 boys team in the morning had their second win of the season over St Albans 8-4 at home, before the U14 boys premier league team faced Gosling in the afternoon also at home. The U14s mirrored the U16s with another 8-4 win. The U16 boys sit top of Herts division 1 with one match to play. While the U14 boys move up to 3rd in the South East Central standings with a crucial clash up against top of the table Batchwood in a few weeks. A win in this fixture could proprel Berkhamsted above our local rivals.

Our U12 boys and U18 girls teams unfortunately lost their away matches yesterday to Welwyn and St Albans respectively. The U18 girls were playing their final match of the season and it turned out to be a shootout for the league title with St Albans. The girls team is made up of 2 players who compete in one singles match and then team up for a doubles match. The team for the day was Lorah Wilson at No.1  and Amy Stoker at No.2. Lorah lost her singles while Amy evened the tie with a win in her match. It was down to the doubles to decide it! The St Albans girls played some solid doubles and had a stronger communication between them. This proved the key factor as they took the match and with it the league title.  The U12 boys held there own even though they were a player down due to injury. However, Welwyn were too strong on the day.

The last tie of the weekend would be the men’s team away to Leverstock Green. Leverstock Green have won both their matches so far this season emphatically 12-0. Berkhamsted would have to bring strong team and be at their best. The Berkhamsted men definitely showed this character and made it a comfortable 12-0 win. Due to match postponements, this was the men’s first match of the season and an important one to win, considering the form of Leverstock Green going into the match. Next up for the men will be a home tie with West Herts.

So after a massive weekend of Aegon Team Tennis, the U14 county cup finals will take place in Nottingham from Thursday. Joel Pierleoni as well as our U14 team player George Carter will be in action for Hertfordshire. Good luck boys!
