Spring Term News and Results
The BETA team has been very busy over the first half of this term culminating in half term events at Gosling, Batchwood, Corby and ATP tour level in Marseille. During this period, we also had our first annual BETA Awards evening which highlighted some of the great achievements over the past year.
Anna Popecsu has continued her comeback from injury in 2016 as she has started competing on the British Tour and ITF Women’s Futures tour. Anna has entered ITF events in Glasgow, Sunderland and Wirral which have given her valuable experience of life on the pro tour. She has also had some very encouraging results on the women’s British Tour with a round of 16 result in Stirling. Fifteen-year-old James Portal has also made a few senior event appearances in open events in Northampton and Heston where he made the final of both grade 5 events. Other notable results during the spring term saw Nicholas Blagg, 12, make an U16 final at Gerrard’s Cross and Reece Farrow, 13, winning a doubles event at Gosling.
February Half Term
Over the half term week BETA had players competing in local events at Gosling & Batchwood, a British Tour in Corby, a junior event in Tipton and Rameez Junaid partnering former Wimbledon champion Jonny Marray were in action in the ATP 250 event in Marseille.
Sophia Mezzone, 12, travelled to Tipton for the annual grade 3 event, entering in 3 events; U14 & U16 girl’s singles and the U14 girl’s doubles. Sophia worked her way through the draw in each event making the final of all 3. In both singles finals she fell short of victory however she was able to finish the week on a high note with a win in the doubles. Anna Popescu playing another British Tour in Corby had a very good week making the semi-finals and on route defeating the top seed in the event. Closer to home, Alex Baptist and James Portal both made quarterfinals in Batchwood. Alex doing a double as he made the last 8 in the U14 & U16 age groups. Emily Ineson after a tough start to the event regrouped to win the U16 consolation.
Down in Marseille, Rameez and Jonny batted through the earlier rounds to eventually make the quarterfinals. This is their first officially event as a team in 2016 and they are hoping to spend a few good moths together working on their games together. The quarterfinal was a very high level affair with not much given away on either side. Igor Zelenay and Alex Bury pipped our boys at the post, 7-6, 6-7, 10-5.
The first annual BETA Awards was a great success, with over 50 people attending. Awards were given out to players who have shown excellence in effort, improvement and achievement over the last 12 months. During the evening there was also a raffle, quiz and we had a special guest DJ Ali G! Better known to the Berkhamsted locals as Will Tribe! Big congratulations to all the winners on the night and keep up the good work for 2016!
