Roland Garros 2017 Predictions

Roland Garros for 2017 is now under way and the BETA team have put together their personal predications for the title this year in both the men’s and women’s events. As always there are some interesting view….

Craig Blythe

Women’s Title – Elina Svitolina

With 4 titles this year so far and 2 of them coming on the clay in Istanbul and Rome last week, Svitolina is arguably the form player and my pick to be the women’s champion this year. She has a 31/6 win/loss record in 2017, which is the best record on tour. The Ukrainian has never won a slam so nerves could kick in as she goes deeper in the tournament, which will be something to consider.

Outside Bet – Kristina Mladenovic

Men’s Title – Rafael Nadal

There is only one man for this title in 2017 and that is Rafa Nadal. If I was to go purely on the form book he would still come out on top as he has won 3 clay court titles this season, never mind the fact the he has won Roland Garros 9 times! There is only one winner for me….. Vamos Rafa!

Outside Bet – Dominic Theim

Tyrell Diaz Stevens

Women’s Title – Simona Halep

This is a precautious tip, as I’m not sure how she has recovered form the ankle injury she sustained in Rome earlier this month. All being well I feel she is playing the best level and looks the most threatening on the clay this season.

Outside Bet – Sam Stosur

Men’s Title – Rafael Nadal

Hard to look past Nadal for this title as he has found his clay court form of old. It has been a throw back season so far with Federer dominating the early stages and then Nadal taking over once the clay tennis begins. Djokovic did not cause Nadal much trouble when the pair met in Madrid, although the Serb did find some better form in Rome. Could Agassi provide the spark to help him defend his title? I’m afraid I cant see that and I think it will be a procession to ‘La Decima’!

Outside Bet – Dominic Theim

Nick Brooks

Women’s Title – Simon Halep

Halep has shown she is capable of providing some brilliant tennis at the moment reaching the final in Rome. Had it not been for a bad turn on her ankle, she may well have taken the title. She will be determined to go one stage further than she did in Paris in 2014 when she was runner up.

Outside Bet – Caroline Garcia

Men’s Title – Stan Wawrinka

It is difficult to pick someone other than Nadal at Roland Garros, however, having seen the draw that Stan has, and given his last weeks form at Geneva, he will be full of confidence for a tournament where many of the top players have previously struggled for form. Stan is also the one player who can really turn the heat up and will be ready to pounce of any early weaknesses shown by his opponents.

Outside Bet – Jo Wilfred Tsonga

Rod Minozzo

Men’s Title – Rafael Nadal

Nadal is playing too well on the clay this season to look past him. I think it is the year of Nadal and Federer. Stan the man is always dangerous and if he gets past the first week I think he could cause some damage.

Outside Bet – Stan Wawrinka

Women’s Title – Garbine Muguruza

The defending champion is starting to come into a bit a form. I’m sure she will have fond memories of last year and that with instil good feelings in her and get her playing her best tennis. Onxe she gets going in the event she will be hard to stop.

Outside Bet – Dominika Cibulkova
