Larissa wins two tournaments in a week!
Over the last week Larissa Gungah, 16, has won 2 tournaments in Edgbaston and Felixstowe respectively. She also finished runner-up in a 3rd event in Nottingham.
In Edgbaston, Larissa competed in the U18 category and was the top seed which gave her a bye through to the semi-finals. She got off to a great start in the semi, taking the first set 6-1. The second set proved to be a lot tougher as her opponent started to play a lot more aggressive and was taking the initiative early on in points. Larissa weathered the storm and with some consistent ground play was able to grind out the second 7-5. In the final Larissa was on top form. Her serve and groundstroke strength was evident and she ran away with the match 6-1, 6-1.
Next up would be a visit to the Felixstowe for a mid week grass court event, the 87th Jackamans Felixstowe Junior Open. This time Larissa would be the 2nd seed and she lived up to the seeding, by powering her way to finals with the loss of only 4 games. Larissa would meet the 3rd send in the final, Katie Mcgarrigle. It took awhile for Larissa to get a handle on the mixed game that Mcgarrigle was playing. However, eventually Larissa found her rhythm and won her second title of the week by a 6-4, 6-2 score line. “Overall I’m very happy with how I’m playing, my groundstrokes are feeling very solid and my first serve percentage is improving” said Larissa. Unfortunately Larissa couldn’t get the hat trick of wins in the week as she had to pull out of the final in the Nottingham event due to a back injury. Nonetheless a great week and I’m sure there will be more to come.
In other BETA player news this week, Anna Popescu is competing at a pro tour 10K event in Romania. Anna won her way through to the last qualification round, but fell just short of a place in her first pro level main draw. After picking herself up from that one, she was given a place in the doubles main draw where Anna and her Romanian partner won their first round match before going out in the quarter-finals. This was the first main draw win at this level for Anna and she is showing continued improvement this year. The singles main draw win is not too far away!
Anna will be back in action next week at another pro tour event in Romania this time in Bucharest, Joel Pierleoni, Ali Habib and George Carter are all competing in a U14 category 1 Tennis Europe event in Barcelona and our tournament camps will conclude with the final event of the summer, the country closed. Good luck to all.
