Joel represents GB in annual friendly
Joel Pierleoni has recently represented Great Britain in the annual friendly match against France. The event was held at the National Tennis Centre in Roehampton, with matches being contested over 2 days in early November.
The annual friendly between Great Britain and France took place in early November at the National tennis centre in Roehampton. BETA player Joel Pierleoni was making his 3rd appearance for GB. The French team brought a very strong line up notably in the boys division. The format was U13 and U14 with 3 boys and 3 girls in each age group. Each player would get 3 singles and 1 doubles match.
Joel drew the French number 1, Leo Raquin in the first match. He started very nervously and couldn’t quite get into the match against a very experienced international player, eventually going down 6-3, 6-3. In the next match Joel was up against his conqueror in the Tennis Europe final in Barcelona back in June, Giovanni Perricard. This time there would be no repeat and Joel evened the score with a hard fought 3 set victory. On Day 2 Joel played his final singles match against the undefeated French number 3, Mehdi Sadaoui who had previously beaten the other 2 GB boys on day 1. Joel started very well storming to the first set, before the French boy hit back to take the 2nd. It was match tiebreak time! The tiebreak see sawed in each players favour before Joel took a 9-7 lead. That would be the last point Joel would win as the Sadaoui stayed strong and consistent to win the next 4 points in a row and take it 11-9.
A great experience for Joel nonetheless. He competed against the top 3 players in France of his age and held his own in each encounter. “These are the kind of matches Joel needs to be playing, under pressure for the first point and forced to raise his game and improve from the first point to the last.” Team GB did prevail in the contest 20 matches to 18 to win back the trophy they lost last year.
Next up for Joel will be a couple of regional events later in November before departing for the U12 Orange Bowl in Miami in December. Best of luck Joel!
