Joel helps Herts to 3rd place in County Cup Finals
Over the past weekend the U14 County cup finals took place in Nottingham. BETA was represented by Joel Pierleoni turning out for Hertfordshire in the teams event. The Herts team were drawn in Group A and matched up with Leicestershire, Hampshire and the perennially strong Surrey. The group winner would go through to the final, while the 2nd place team would play off for 3rd and 4th. Herts opened day 1 with a strong win against Hampshire 4 rubbers to 2, with Joel winning his singles and doubles quite convincingly. Later in the day it would be a match up with arguably the tournament favourites Surrey, who had been shocked early in the day going down to Leicestershire in a tiebreak shootout after the 6 rubbers were level 3-3. Joel again had a solid singles win but it wasn’t all smooth sailing for the Herts boys as day 1 finished with the 2 teams looked at 2 rubbers a piece. Day 2 started with the doubles rubbers to decide the result of the match. Unfortunately, Joel and the other Herts boy could not overcome a strong Surrey doubles line up, losing both rubbers and going down 4-2. With Hampshire also beating Leicestershire in the other match up, it was left with all 4 teams with one win and one loss going into the final group match. It would be all to play!
Joel got the boys off to good start with another singles victory, but just like the Surrey tie, the match was looked at 2-2 going into the doubles. This time however Herts were able to split the doubles rubbers and then claim the match with a victory in the tiebreak shootout. However, even with victory in this match it wasn’t enough to finish in first, as Surrey smashed Hampshire 6-0 to go through to the finals with a superior win percentage. It would be the 3rd and 4th playoff against Kent for Joel and the Herts U14 boys.
The singles matches went very well and Herts lead 3-1 going into the doubles. Joel claimed his 4th singles victory out of 4 of the weekend. The doubles also went very well with straight set victories in both matches for Herts. And so 3rd place was clinched very comfortably, 5-1. Surrey ended up winning the competition also with a 5-1 win in the final over Lancashire.
Well done to Joel, the rest of the Herts boys and Tim the captain for a great weekend of competing. Aegon team tennis matches will return this weekend with our men, women, and U14 & U12 boys all in action. Good luck to all!
