BETA Highlights 2018
What a year 2018 has been. We have seen the return of Federer and Djokovic to the top of their games. Federer starting the year in blistering form winning the Aussie Open, Nadal making Roland Garros his home once again and Novak Djokovic making a great comeback and winning the final two slams of the year. The girls were split between, Wozniacki, Halep, Kerber and young gun Naomi Osaka.
Closer to home – we have seen the size of the BETA coaching staff grow in number. Towards the end of 2017 we welcomed Steve Dunklin bringing an abundance of experience at many different coaching levels. We have also seen Joshua Sapwell, former tour level player and Orange Bowl winner join our team. Both members have made a great addition in this last year and we thank them both for their help so far.
We have steadily seen an increasing number of players at all levels throughout the academy and the numbers have grow from 40 to 50 players. Anna Popescu has battled her way to 5 futures finals winning one of them and as a result breaking into the top 600 WTA. Joel Pierleoni, 15, represented Great Britain in the Junior Davis Cup a year younger than most of his peers and also fired his way to the final of an U18 ITF in Cyprus. Reece Farrow stormed the summer season winning 4 consecutive regional tournaments and his hard work paid off with an exhibition match teaming up with Helen Skelton against Anton du Beke partnering BETA team mate Sophia Underwood. This match was played in front of a big crowd at the Royal Albert Hall under the tutelage of Jamie and Judy Murray. We have had many other players being called up to represent their county and or region in their age groups. It is equally great to see some of our other players competing in our Berkhamsted Club’s tennis box leagues on a regular basis and also in the annual tournament, taking on and down many members of the club. Well done.
Furthermore, It has been amazing to see many of our players excelling in different areas off the court and who deserve their recognition. To name a few, Helena Ullyatt secured a sports scholarship to Berkhamsted School. Ollie Connor passed his 11+ exams with flying colours. Lola Hannah became a National Champ in fives a year young and Lorah Wilson flew through her driving test.
Most importantly, thank you to everyone, parents, players and coaches for a great year and wishing everyone a fantastic year ahead.
Happy New Year and all the best for a successful 2019!
