BETA Double at Berkhamsted Junior Open 2016

Over the Easter weekend the Berkhamsted Tennis Club hosted their 7th annual junior open championships, with players coming from far and wide to take part in the event, including representatives from BETA in the U12 and U14 age groups.

The U14 category saw great success for BETA, culminating on Easter Saturday with a win for Emily Ineson, 14, in some very trying conditions. Emily, the top seed in the girls U14 event, won her first grade 4 event with a straight sets win in the final over the 3rd seed Maisie Tomlinson. This was a great way for Emily to cap off her U14 career before she moves on to compete in the U16 age group next week in time for the summer season.

Reece Farrow and Nicholas Blagg also had success on Saturday, both winning their way through to the semi-finals of the U14 boys. Being on opposite halves of the draw, this set up a potential all BETA final the following day. Reece was awarded a walk-over in his semi-final, as his opponent was unable to take the court due to an injured neck. Nicholas was up against the top seed, James Murphy in his semi-final. It was a very cautious and nervous start for Nicholas as he went 5-1 down in the first set. However, from this point on he managed to work his way back into the match, coming back to 5-4 and very nearly levelling the set. This proved to be a step to far for Nicholas, and he went onto to lose the first 6-4. The momentum had definitely started to swing in his favour and in between rain delays he managed to clinch the second set 6-3. The dreaded match tiebreak loomed. Nicholas managed to get out to a solid early lead, before Murphy managed to slowly claw his way back to take it 10-8 and with it the match.

So the all BETA final was not to be, it was now up to Reece to keep the title in Berkhamsted. It was another nervous start from Reece as he quickly went down 3-0. However, he showed his supreme fitness and extra freshness on the day by making more and more balls and eventually wearing his opponent down to take the first set 6-4. This was too much for Murphy after the intense match in the morning and he was unable to continue. Reece completed the BETA U14 double by taking the title!

Joshua Hayes won the U14 consolation and it was great to see William Carrington, as well as rookie BETA players William Hunt and George Ivory compete in yellow ball events for the first time in the Berkhamsted Junior Open.

Next up for the BETA team will be the Rickmansworth Open, starting this week. Good luck to all BETA players for a successful and productive week!
