Anna Popescu continues rankings rise
Anna Popescu has been competing this past month in Monastir, Tunisia in four 15K pro events. The tour was successful as Anna attained her first singles ranking and further increased her doubles WTA rankings to #1200 and #620 respectively.
Over the 4 week tour, Anna played 3 out 4 main draw singles events, reaching the quarter-finals of the 4th week and finishing runner-up in 3 out of the 4 tournaments in the doubles event (reaching the semi-final in the other one). In the doubles events, Anna partnered Venezuelan Nadia Echeverria Alam. The partnership proved very successful considering they had not player together in the past.
“My main goal heading to Tunisia was to gain a singles world ranking so I was very pleased to come away having achieved this. I had a couple of tough 3 set losses early on in the trip, but I knew if I kept doing the right things and knocking on the door, the ranking would come. So it was a nice moment for me when my persistence paid off. I also had some good doubles results, I was very happy with the consistency of our performances with Nadia. We are hoping to align our schedules again later on this year to play some more events and hopefully we will go one further and bring h0me a title” said Anna added
Anna will go out on the road again for 2 more tournament blocks this season with the aim to push her rankings up another level. The higher ranking will be important as she looks forward to 2019 and the start of the transition tour. Anna is working towards entry to 25K events next season and to attain this entry, she will need to keep pushing her ranking up. “My goal for the rest of the year is definitely to build on these rankings” added Anna.
If the last month is anything to go by, she will give herself every chance to attain this goal. Congratulations from BETA Tennis team and wishing you the best of luck for the rest of the year.
